چکیده

Geographical information systems, particularly one intended to provide high resolution spatial data on the web, require specific methods in user interface design and data processing. These methods should support both a quick visual display of the geographic area of interest and the navigation and orientation inside the virtual environment with little cognitive effort. On the other hand the typical combination of geospatial data and mapping capabilities with databases of statistical and feature information about the area requires within the desktop environment advanced methods for a direct data manipulation. This paper describes the prototype GTOPO30 VRML Map Generator, a tool for the high resolution terrain simulation of the earth’s surface. User controlled texture mapping and the integration of city information services via the web provide a powerful visual display of information, allowing users a spatial analysis of a vast amount of data. The map generator includes two characteristic visual user interfaces: an interface with three detail maps representing different zoom levels of the earth’s surface and a 3Duser interface for the exploration of the geovirtual environment. A control console provides specific elements for the geospatial navigation and the real-time data manipulation inside the virtual world. The prototype combines some new aspects of web-based information visualization: a rapid visual selection of the geographic area of interest, a combination of advanced 3D (virtual landscape) and 2D (map) navigation and the user controlled visualization of geospatial data and feature information.

Application of the Shuttle Laser Altimeter in an Accuracy Assessment of Gtopo30, a Global 1-kilometer Digital Elevation Model

Continental-scale topographic profiles between 28.45° N and S latitudes acquired by the first flight of the Shuttle Laser Altimeter (SLA) experiment are used to evaluate the vertical accuracy of GTOPO30, a global digital elevation model with a grid spacing of approximately 1 km. GTOPO30 is a compilation of eight sources of elevation information, including raster and vector data sets. The mean a...

Validating Global Digital Elevation Models with Degree Confluence Project Information and Aster-dem on Geo Grid

There are two major freely available global digital elevation datasets, known as GTOPO30 and SRTM. To know the accuracies of those data in global scale, relative evaluation of these data and validation with global scale are performed. We compared elevation values of GTOPO30 and SRTM 30 arc second datasets globally and found there are places in the world with more than kilometres differences in ...

Naked eye star visibility and limiting magnitude mapped from DMSP - OLS satellite data

We extend the method introduced by Cinzano et al. (2000a) to map the artificial sky brightness in large territories from DMSP satellite data, in order to map the naked eye star visibility and telescopic limiting magnitudes. For these purposes we take into account the altitude of each land area from GTOPO30 world elevation data, the natural sky brightness in the chosen sky direction, based on Ga...

Automatic Tetrahedral Mesh Generation for Environmental Problems

In this paper we present new ideas and applications to environmental problems of an innovative tetrahedral mesh generator which was introduced in [1,2]. A local refinement/derefinement algorithm for nested triangulations [3] and a simultaneous untangling and smoothing procedure [4] are the main involved techniques. The mesh generator can be applied to 3-D complex domains whose boundaries are pr...

An Enhanced Global Elevation Model Generalized from Multiple Higher Resolution Source Datasets

Global digital elevation models are routinely used in a variety of earth science applications. GTOPO30, a widely used global elevation model produced by the U.S. Geological Survey, was produced in the mid-1990s from several regional sources of elevation information. Since the time GTOPO30 was developed, new and improved sources of elevation data have become available, and the U.S. Geological Su...
